Top Treatments for Managing Arthritis

The numbers surrounding arthritis in the United States are nothing short of alarming — currently, about 58.5 million adults have been diagnosed with arthritis, which is expected to jump to nearly 78.5 million by 2040.

Given that May is Arthritis Awareness Month, Dr. Marc Pietropaoli and the team here at Victory Sports Medicine & Orthopedics decided to highlight a few effective treatment options for managing joint pain and inflammation.

It’s important to understand that there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, which is a catchall term for diseases that lead to joint pain and inflammation. Besides sharing symptoms, the other commonality between the many types of arthritis is that there is no cure, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t solutions.

Taking a regenerative approach to arthritis

The orthopedic world is extremely excited about the role that regenerative medicine can play in helping to heal a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including arthritis.

Our practice offers two types of regenerative medicine: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and bone marrow aspirate cell (BMAC) injections. With each of these treatments, we harness the healing resources found in your own body, such as powerful stem cells and growth factors. Through PRP and BMAC therapies, we’re simply concentrating and redirecting these resources into your damaged tissues.

One of the many reasons why this approach to arthritis excels is that we’re not merely treating your symptoms but helping your joints rebuild and repair themselves on a more sustainable level.

The effectiveness of regenerative medicine has been illustrated. One study found that PRP injections for knee osteoarthritis are a valid treatment that reduces pain and improves long-term quality of life.

Strengthening your joints

Another fantastic way to manage arthritis is through targeted programs that encourage strength, flexibility, and range of motion in your joints. Your joints are complex areas where bones meet and are held together by various connective tissues, including ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and muscles.

Through customized physical therapy and fitness programs, our goal is to beef up the support tissues to take the pressure off of the bones in your joints.

The benefits of exercise when you have arthritis are almost without limits, but it’s important that your efforts are targeted and don’t harm more than good. Our sports medicine services offer a wide range of programs that we can customize to your needs and goals to help you move more confidently and without pain.
